Anniversary of the death of King Richard III
Today marks the anniversary of King Richards III’s death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.
Richard III led a mounted cavalry charge against Henry Tudor in an attempt to kill him and end the conflict. During the ensuing fighting, Richard III was surrounded by Tudor’s supporters who cut him down. Contemporary accounts generally agree that a blow, or blows to the head killed Richard III, some crediting Welsh foot soldiers armed with halberds as the killers.
After the rediscovery of Richard’s body in 2012, Dadlington village took part in the funeral procession in 2015 carrying Richard to his final resting place at Leicester Cathedral. From the Fenn Lanes the procession passed through Dadlington, Sutton Cheney, Bosworth Battlefield, Market Bosworth, Newbold Verdon and Desford before ending back in the City.
