If you’re staying at Hall Farm, don’t be surprised if you hear the alpacas quietly humming, clicking and clucking to one another.
No, they’re not angry as one guest asked!
Humming is one of the ways alpacas communicate. Mums hum to their babies to reassure them, friends hum while grazing together, and sometimes they simply hum because they’re content. You might also hear soft clicking and clucking noises as they chat amongst themselves – it’s all part of their gentle way of communicating.
Occasionally you’ll hear a louder noise called an “alarm call.” That’s their way of saying, “Hang on… what’s that over there?” Usually it’s something deeply suspicious like a pigeon, a dog or, occasionally, one of us wearing a different hat.
And yes… everyone asks about spitting! Despite their reputation, our alpacas very rarely spit at people. Spitting is usually something they reserve for other alpacas during squabbles over food or personal space, or if they feel frightened or threatened. So as long as everyone stays calm and respectful, you’re far more likely to be greeted with a curious glance than a mouthful of grass.
The best way to enjoy our alpacas is simply to watch them. They’re naturally curious and may wander over to inspect you, especially if you’re sitting quietly with a cup of tea at The Old Tractor Shed. They do like to get up close and personal!
Just don’t be offended if they decide you’re not that interesting after all and wander off again. They have grass to supervise!
