Sunday Lunching
We’re always being asked for recommendations for a jolly good roast nearby, so we thought we’d put together this quick guide…
Just imagine a perfect Sunday! A lazy morning watching the horses grazing and the buzzards soaring during a leisurely morning dip in the hot tub. What better way to enjoy your day than to head to one of the amazing pubs and restaurants we are so lucky to have on our doorstep. Whether you want to nip 3 minutes down the road or take a drive out into beautiful Leicestershire, here are a few of the spots we ourselves love to visit, when we get the time! And there’s no washing up!

🚶♂️➡️On foot 35-50 mins route dependent via road or canal towpath. Note the last stretch of road into the village is 50mph with a narrow vergeless 30mph section so we recommend not walking after dusk.

This gorgeous coaching inn turned gastro pub run by Oliver Warner and his team, is set in the picturesque village of Sutton Cheney opposite the village church. The Herc offers fresh and seasonal dishes presented beautifully alongside great local beer, an extensive range of hand-crafted gins and a rare selection of quirky and interesting wines. With a choice of Sunday roasts and delicious desserts, this pub is a local gem. Throughout the week the Herc offers a full menu including their Monday night Comfort Food and Saturday brunch. Why not head up the lane to the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre after lunch to stretch your legs in the wonderful parkland.
The Black Horse, Market Bosworth

🚶♂️➡️Energetic guests can walk from us to Market Bosworth via Sutton Cheney, Cadeby and through the Market Bosworth Country Park or via Sutton Cheney and the Gated Road bringing you out at the pub and market square. This route can take upwards of one hour.

The Black Horse is an a la carte restaurant in a beautiful market square setting in the historic village of Market Bosworth. A rustic restaurant with exposed wood beams and outdoor terrace, serving sophisticated global cuisine, it offers a superb range of high quality, home-made gourmet cuisine. The experienced team of chefs use carefully selected local ingredients to produce an array of high quality, traditional and contemporary dishes to tempt your tastebuds. Sunday roasts are offered with a fixed price choice of 2 or 3 courses and even a trio of meats if you simply can’t decide! Market Bosworth is a great place to take a stroll either around the large country park (2 mins walk from this pub) or around the village centre with its independent shops, cafés and eateries.

Mallories is a chic modern bar and restaurant set in a beautiful Georgian farmhouse in the historic village of Kirkby Mallory. The team prides themselves on quality food cooked from scratch by highly skilled chefs. With a carefully chosen selection of wines, lagers and ales, the passionate bartenders and waiting team aim to give diners a great experience. Their menus are frequently updated to offer the best of fresh, local, seasonal ingredients in their exquisitely presented dishes. Sunday lunch has a 2 or 3 course set price and comes with a choice of meats, fish or vegetarian options, a host of sides and of course the all important cauliflower cheese. For motorbike racing enthusiasts, the Mallory Park track is just down the road. Also open Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Thursday to Sunday from 12noon.

The Royal Redgate has been a coaching inn since the 18th Century. This historic building is the most central pub in England, standing right beside the famous Watling Street Roman road (now the A5 major route) with rural views to the rear, making it a super convenient place to stop off during your journey to Hall Farm. Inside you’ll find a bustling dining room, cosy snugs and a well-stocked bar offering a large selection of gins, draught beers, ales, cocktails, spirits, select wines and fresh ground coffees. Choose from the selection of Sunday roast meats or the larger size platter for hungry diners. The Redgate is open all week too, offering a full menu with steak nights and pie nights, and they really are the best pies around!

Run by husband and wife team Adam & Stacey Ward, their ethos at the restaurant is simple; to source, prepare, cook and serve ethically grown food that is family friendly, and perfect for any occasion. The majority of the ingredients used by the team are sourced within 3 miles of the restaurant, with many elements being grown directly at the restaurant in their two greenhouses. Having won several awards and accolades they are constantly reinvesting into the building and the restaurant to be able to provide a dining experience that is second to none. Also open Thursday — Saturday 12pm — 2pm (5pm — Close)

My fvaourite! The Horse and Jockey is a large countryside restaurant and bar set in the village of Congerstone located on the Leicestershire and Warwickshire border. With a selection of menus including Sunday lunch, the Sunday roasts are served with garlic and rosemary potatoes, honey roasted parsnips, baked cauliflower cheese, seasonal vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. What more could you wish for! Throughout the week this gastropub offers bar snacks, pizzas and a large selection of drinks, cocktails and coffee. Take a stroll around this lovely English village after lunch.

The Lancaster Arms is located in the pretty village of Desford, on the King Richard III tourist trail, and is believed to be near to the site where King Richard rested his army during the Battle of Bosworth in 1685. This large but cosy pub offers a great selection of gin, wine and fine, earthy, freshly prepared food in a contemporary English country pub & restaurant. They also boast a unique Winter Garden for covered outdoor dining. Their Sunday lunch sharing boards are legendary offering Sirloin of Beef, Goosnargh Turkey or Lamb, plus Yorkies, stuffing, roasties, three veggies, gravy & cheese sauce.

If a carvery is your thing, then this is an incredible and stylish carvery! The Grey Goose is a family-run restaurant located in the peaceful village of Gilmorton. With a modern brickwork and open-log-fire indoor space and an outside heated terrace, it’s the perfect place to wine and dine. Housed in a restored building, they promise an intimate and relaxed dining experience that offers something different and ensures you enjoy a memorable food experience every time. The Sunday carvery menu offers turkey, pork or beef with a host of delicious trimmings.

Last, but most definitely not least this is a firm favourite of ours and worth the scenic drive!
Owned by former England and Nottinghamshire cricketers Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney, and winner of Pub of the year in 2023 and 2024 in Leicestershire, The Griffin Inn, a gastro pub in Charnwood Leicestershire, is renowned for its delightful food and drinks near scenic Bradgate Park. Newly refurbished with a gorgeous interior and stunning outdoor space this destination pub is a great choice. Open weekdays for lucnh and dinner until 10pm and Saturdays for breakfast too. A great stop off if you’re planning a walk in the historic Bradgate Park. The divine Sundays lunches offer a choice of meats or the Cricketer’s Roast combining beef, chicken and pork with all the trimmings. Sides of pigs in blankets, stuffing balls and caluiflower cheese are not to be missed.
